Dr Garrick Hileman

Short bio: 
Garrick was ranked as one of the 100-most influential economists in the UK and Ireland and is best known for his cryptocurrency and blockchain research. He is the author of the first University of Cambridge "Global Cryptocurrency Benchmarking Study", where he also taught the first UK class on blockchain technology. Previously Garrick was head of research at Blockchain.com and a visiting fellow at both the University of Cambridge and London School of Economics. He is currently an adjunct professor researching/teaching topics ranging from AI to the rise & fall of empires.


Long bio: Garrick was ranked as one of the 100-most influential economists in the UK & Ireland. He is best known for his monetary innovation research and teaching, and his blockchain and cryptocurrency research is some of the most cited/downloaded in the field. Garrick is currently a lecturer and adjunct professor researching and teaching AI, future of work, bitcoin, innovation, blockchain, macro, and the rise & fall of empires. 

Garrick is a regularly invited speaker to various private and public sector events and institutions, including the CIA, US Army and Naval War Colleges, Federal Reserve, Bank of England, Bank of International Settlements, and the Financial Stability Board. Garrick is frequently asked to share his research and perspective with the media, including the BBC, CNBC, FT, WSJ, and NPR.

Notable cryptocurrency and blockchain research publications include the first "Global Cryptocurrency Benchmarking Study" (University of Cambridge) and first "Global Blockchain Benchmarking Study" (University of Cambridge). He also created and published the CoinDesk "State of Bitcoin" and "State of Blockchain" reports from 2013-2016. Garrick's other published research includes sovereign debt, financial crises, financial repression and prudential regulation, black markets, and systemic risk. He completed his PhD in economic history at the London School of Economics under the supervision of professors Albrecht Ritschl and Niall Ferguson.

Garrick's teaching includes developing the UK's first university taught class on blockchain technology at the University of Cambridge. He has taught numerous executive education programs, workshops and classes at other universities including Oxford, Columbia, Northwestern, Imperial College of London, and the London School of Economics, where he was a visiting fellow from 2020-22.

Garrick's practitioner experience includes serving on the boards of directors of both publicly traded and private companies. He has 20+ years of private sector work experience with both early and later-stage start-ups like Blockchain.com, as well as established companies such as Bank of America, The Home Depot, IDG, and Allianz. He has worked or consulted in a wide range of industries, including banking, technology, online media, specialty finance, insurance, business services, retail, non-profit, education, and government. 

Garrick is an early adopter and passionate about technology. His technology work experience ranges from co-founding a San Francisco-based new venture incubator to IT strategy consulting for multinationals. Garrick has extensive experience communicating and translating complex technical subjects for a wide range of audiences.

Garrick’s volunteer work includes serving as a Big City Mountaineers guide for at-risk urban teens on backcountry excursions in the Sierra Nevada. He was also a founding member of the record-setting PolarVision expedition, which raised funds and awareness for sight-related charities and successfully completed the first visually impaired Antarctic coast-to-pole trek.
